Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World

Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World by Cal Newport.

I like to read books but I only recommend the ones I think are exceptional. This is one of those books. The science behind concentration is fascinating. The author explains how fragmenting our attention by constantly scrolling through social media on our smart phones or checking our email inbox every 15 minutes can have long-standing or permanent effects on the ability to focus. Sharpening an ability to engage in "Deep Work" by learning to lock out the distractions of shallow activities helps produce massive benefits personally as well as for the markets and society.

After reading this book there are so many changes I'm making to increase my productivity. For example, I turn my phone off when I'm writing or working. Also, when I know I need to get some serious work done, I get away from other distractions - I do the same when I need to think through some things. I'm also going to be very careful letting my kids have access to social media for as long as I can, through college if I could.

This book makes a good case for taking long intentional breaks from social media and probably an even better case for not letting you kids use social media while they are young and still learning.

I highly recommend this book.
